“These haiku – or ‘ayku’ as the ‘translator’, who signed himself only as ‘S’ and about whom I know nothing – were found whilst decluttering the back bedroom of a friend one day. He claims to have no knowledge of where they came from or who gave them to him, in a scruffy green file wallet. They were typewritten, not so far as I know ever committed to a computer, floppy disc or memory stick of any kind. I have been so far unsuccessful in finding any information concerning either ‘S’ or the ostensible author of these ‘ayku, Mankyo; or indeed of the island of Wizensho, which seems to appear on no known map of Japan, ancient or modern.”
