In November 2022 Melville received an email from his letting agent with the subject heading ‘Preparing for Power Cuts or Planned Black Outs.’ The tone of the email presented this as an actuality rather than a possibility, and then outlined advice on what to do both before and after the looming black outs. Power Cuts is a series of abstract representations of the planned pattern of national shutdown contained in HM Government’s contingency planning for an energy emergency, titled ‘Electricity Supply Emergency Code.’

Scotland’s best kept secret, ahem, nicky [nick-e] melville has been described positively as an ‘avant-radge’ and pejoratively as ‘a poet.’ Melville’s most recent publications are visual pieces: sounding out (Essence Press, 2024) and magic’s quair, a free card with Timglaset, 2023. His magnum-opus (to date!) The Imperative Commands came out with Dostoyevsky Wannabe in 2022 and Decade of Cu ts, his selected poems, was published in 2021 with Blue Diode Press. He is working on the third book in his ABBODIES trilogy, in which pop legends ABBA team up with problematic fave James Bond to make sense of the horror of Brexit and geopolitical coincidence. He makes music as Fuck This, a project which could be described as Ivor Cutler on [nick-]e. Melville is a Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow and a Teaching Fellow in Creative Writing at the University of Edinburgh. He lives in Edinburgh with his partner and whippet puppy Beckett.
